The Big Three
Does anyone remember "the big three" golfers of the sixties and 70's? (That's pre-history for the youngsters out there).
Arnold Palmer (86), Jack Nicklaus (76) and Gary Player (80) who have won 13 Masters between them and appeared 147 times, made up the Honorary starting party of the Masters at Augusta. The Masters is traditionally started with a drive off the first tee by a legend (or legends) of the game.
Unfortunately, Arnold Palmer was not able to hit a drive but Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus were able to hit drives a long way down the fairway.
One of the wonderful things about the Honorary start of the Masters is that it takes place before 8am on the first day of play and a great number of the competing golfers make the effort to come out and watch. This shows a deep respect for the game and its traditions.
